CAPTION: Noel strengthened into a hurricane over the Atlantic after slamming the Caribbean with heavy rains, flooding and mudslides that left at least 115 dead. (Nov. 2) 2007
[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:aerials of flooding and damage] Noel is a hurricane now and the storm is moving away from the Bahamas. But the slow-mover’s effects are still being felt in the Dominican Republic.
[Notes:aerial of flooded shanty town] Rescue workers are using boats and helicopters to get to communities stranded by flooding.
[Notes:various of people wading in knee-deep water] And while it looks like the sun has finally come out, residents of the island nation will likely be coping with high water for days. Noel left at least 115 people dead as it passed over the Caribbean – most in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
[Notes:file of FL winds] In Florida, several dozen coastal structures are threatened after beaches washed away in the storm surge.
[Notes:storm track and NOAA video] Thursday, the storm had made it to the Bahamas where it dumped 15 inches of rain in spots before heading north and gaining strength.
Forecasters say the storm is expected to continue heading north off the U.S. Coast and will probably weaken now that it is no longer feeding on warm, tropical waters.
